"There is no greater power for change than a community discovering what it cares about."

I am incredibly grateful for the collaborative support of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and its members! Through the amazing generosity of the CAS Community, $56,310 was raised for the Math Motivators Tutoring Program and the Underserved Engagement Initiative of the Modeling the Future Challenge through the CAS Community Counts Challenge.

The Foundation is excited to use these funds to bring the Math Motivators tutoring program to more students in more communities. Over 500 tutors from over 70 companies and 20 universities have connected with over 1,000 students in 18 states and Washington, D.C.

The feedback from Math Motivators program participants continues to be overwhelmingly positive. An 8th-grade student from St. Paul, Minnesota, shared: “The Math Motivators program has been helping me so much. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been given this year.”

Additionally, we are thrilled to expand the Modeling the Future Challenge program to underserved communities by providing access, teacher training and resources for high school students to participate in a real-world math competition that gives them a glimpse into the work of an actuary!

During an Underserved Engagement Initiative Teacher Training Session this summer, Modeling the Future Challenge Mentor and Judge Jim Heidt, FCAS, MAAA, shared these insights: “The actuaries’ job is communicating to people what the models say. That’s the difference between an actuary and a pure statistician. Actuaries are taking their knowledge of the insurance industry and using that to communicate the statistical information. If your students can come across as subject matter experts in what they are writing about, that’s where their focus should be and where they’ll find success.”

I can’t thank you enough, CAS members, for your partnership and sponsorship of these vital Foundation programs. We are so proud to partner with you and grateful for your commitment to helping us create a brighter, more diverse future for the actuarial profession.

THANK YOU!
