The Actuarial Foundation is launching an Advancing Student Achievement (ASA) program at Somerset Elementary School in Bellevue, WA this fall.

Math Imagination (MI) is a project based learning program designed to excite, advance, and foster students’ understanding and interest in math. Actuaries are needed to work with 4th and 5th grade students on fun, interactive math games and to help them complete hands on math projects like kite making and a series architecture projects. Actuarial Mentors will be placed with small groups of 4-5 students to facilitate math-talk and foster a deeper understanding of the math concepts introduced.

The program will take place twice a month for a total of 10 sessions during a school year starting in October 2010. Each MI session will begin at the end of the school day at 3:30pm.  From 3:30-4:00, Actuaries will work with students on interactive math games.  Beginning at 4:00pm to 5:30pm, students will participate in the hands-on learning activities.

How to Volunteer

8-10 mentors are needed per session. Participate one time per month or more if your schedule allows! The ASA program is flexible and will work to accommodate your busy schedule.
