Willis A. Sutton Middle School
Atlanta, GA Mth Club Online The mission of the math club on-line is to enjoy math and make math fun and exciting for other kids, through the creation of a web site. The guiding principle of math club on-line is that “people support that which they create.” The entire process will be fluid, collaborative, and will encourage innovative thoughts regarding math, put those ideas into the web site in a fun, communicative way. Emphasis will be on keeping middle school level students interested in the field of math, challenged and to have fun with math. Additionally, lower level content will be put on the web site for children of younger ages and levels of competence. Students will be selected and invited to be in the club at Sutton Middle School, and will meet after school. Students will generate ideas for the web site, as to material, games and math concepts, which will be presented in an interesting way to other students, tutors, teachers and interested readers worldwide. Students will create much of the content in a collaborative effort under the guidance of the teachers and actuarial mentors. Parents may comment on the site, offer suggestions as well. We want the site to be enjoyed and will allow for suggestions by the users of the site and volunteers that wish to keep it updated. The site will include math fact of the week (day, month, etc.); Math hero of the week, Historical leaders in the field of mathematics (profiles and stories could be included), Profiles of how actuaries uses math in his/her jobs (we could change this monthly), math riddles, tricks to play with calculators, math puzzles (with the answer posted later), etc. |
