Webster Elementary School

Philadelphia, PA
Grant: $1,500

Volunteers from the Casualty Actuarial Society of the Mid-Atlantic Region (CAMAR) partnered with the Webster Elementary School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the creation of a video math library, Make Mine Math (MMM), with third grade students for use by their peers. Actuaries implement topics of the day with real life situations and show how they integrate into the business world. Topics include money, measurement, probability, geometry, numeration and graphing. A game show/talk show format complements this holistic approach to learning the basics of math while bolstering math proficiency.

The video math library allows students to self-evaluate their skills and enables them to absorb more of the creative elements of math that are otherwise cumbersome for teachers to prepare. Students serve as director, cameraperson and scriptwriters for the math videos. Actuaries supplement the topics of the week with student meetings. The alliance of teachers, principal, actuaries and parents are included throughout the process as invaluable sources of support for the children.
