Vanguard High School

New York, NY
Grant: $15,889

Meeting technology needs is a difficult task, particularly for many inner-city high schools that lack the required resources and training. The Mathematics Incorporating Technology (MIT) mentoring program will integrate the use of advanced technology into mathematics classrooms at an urban New York City Public School. Actuarial mentors will assist in the design, implementation, and support of an interactive computer-based learning system called “Qwizdom” for 9th grade mathematics classes at Vanguard High School.

The Qwizdom Interactive Learning System is an innovative computerized instructional system that offers an opportunity to advance the implementation of technology into the mathematics classroom. The actuarial mentoring program will provide a network of mentors to assist educators in planning power-point style, interactive mathematics lessons, provide support during lessons on technological and mathematical aspects of the lesson, and provide the resources necessary to purchase and maintain the technology. Altogether, the goal of this program is to significantly heighten results on the Math A Regents Examinations and overall mathematics competency among students at Vanguard High School.
