The Ringgold High School program targets the population of math-deficient learners and intends to build a lasting partnership with local actuarial professionals who can share their knowledge with students who lack basic mathematics skills. The Advancing Student Achievement mentoring program features 10 mini-lessons in the proficient use of six critical functions of the Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators and the creation and maintenance of a Math Log Book (containing ten exhibits of graphing calculator-based activities). Best practices research in math education suggests that students benefit from hands-on demonstrations for solution of graphing calculator problems in small groups.
The Actuarial Foundation mentors assistance in the Advancing Student Achievement program provides students with opportunities to learn key functions for full immersion into mathematics comprehension. Direct instruction from professional actuaries in targeted math skills development provides that added layer of understanding and real world application of vital mathematics skills. |
