The Multiples of Success project is a math-tutoring program for a selected (pilot) group of Metro Nashville Public Schools. The project involved a collaborative effort between PENCIL (Public Education: Nashville Citizens in Leadership), the Nashville Actuarial Club, and the Metro Nashville Public Schools. The five participating schools were chosen based on factors including Title 1 funding, willingness to participate and test scores.
The project goals included improving elementary-age student learning in mathematics; enhancing mathematics education through the development of a mathematics mentor program; increasing community involvement in public education; and providing students with exposure to professions which rely on math skills. At least one of the participating schools showed a 100 percent improvement in math scores; 63 percent of the 69 participating students showed an improvement in the TCAP scores. In the 2000-2001 school year, this program was expanded to 15 elementary schools covering 480 students, and will incorporate the accountability standards of the Nashville Public Schools. |
