The Daniel Wright Junior HS began a once-a-week math and science club that meets for two 10-week sessions per year (Fall and Spring). The name of the club is called SMART (Science, Math and Robot Technology) and works with 6th grade students on fun math projects. The math portion involves investigations designed to build on concepts learned in the classroom. Examples of the math investigations include an Alice in Wonderland activity using ration and proportion: a Gulliver’s Travels activity using ratio/proportion and fractions/percents and a “design your own carnival game activity” using probability concepts.
The objectives of SMART is to provide students with opportunities to deepen their math knowledge, to introduce students to technology, to encourage and support girls in math subjects and to encourage and support lower achieving students in the subjects of math and science. They also want to build a cohesive team that fosters teamwork and joint problem-solving.
The Actuarial Foundation mentors are involved with all aspects of the club meetings, including assisting students with the math investigations as well as building and programming robots. |
