Appleton High School
Appleton, WI News Article Actuarial volunteers from Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) participated in a pilot program with Appleton North High School using the Money Math Learning Series textbook on Personal Finance & Investments, authored by Jim Tilley. Volunteers taught various chapters and participated as classroom assistants providing one-on-one help where needed. The focus was on developing a curriculum empowering secondary school students to be responsible for their financial futures. Actuarial volunteers worked closely with the school's administration and teachers enabling this program to become a great success. Students learn the basic mathematics of money management by building computer spreadsheets based on situations that are, or could be, part of daily experiences. The course incorporates classroom and onsite services of actuarial volunteers from AAL to teach students employment benefits, insurance needs and investment options. The course covers seven areas of study: career decisions, money management, financial security, credit management, resource management, risk management and consumer rights and responsibilities. The students learn online investment tactics, saving options and even retirement planning. The Money Math book has been approved for use in the Appleton North High School in Appleton, Wisconsin, and is currently being used in other districts as well. |
